blog heading iconVIQUA Professional Plus Pro UV Disinfection Series Brings Water Confidence Back to Beckwith Township

Home to around 6400 people, Beckwith Township comprises a handful of villages and hamlets in Eastern Ontario. As well as fertile farmland, forests and wetlands, the township boasts the Mississippi Lake and River, and the Jock River. A larger underground aquifer supplies the private wells of the residents. Despite the wealth of water resources possessed by this idyllic township, residents have faced serious water stress in recent years. The presence of contaminants of concern robbed them of water confidence, until the Township chose a multi-barrier solution that included the unparalleled protection of the VIQUA Professional Plus Pro Series.

Before VIQUA Professional Plus Pro Series Installations

Milky Way over Beckwith TownshipDuring a routine study in 2000, officials discovered the presence of Trichloroethylene (or TCE) in the aquifer from which township wells draw water. Further study revealed that the source was an abandoned landfill that was leaching the chemical into the water source.

TCE is a chemical used in metal degreasing operations, and is listed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a probable carcinogen. Under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, Environment Canada and Health Canada have listed TCE as one of the 30 most toxic substances in Canada. When TCE breaks down, it produces Vinyl Chloride, a known carcinogen.

After this discovery, the Ministry of Environment began bi-weekly testing of wells, and initiated a temporary solution. Through the Bottled Water Program, bottled water was provided to every home in the affected area. Concerned citizens formed the “Beckwith Contaminated Water Committee” and petitioned for action. The Beckwith Township Council applied for funding from the Ministry of Environment, and the money was used to develop the Water Supply Program.

The Township decided to offer each home in the affected area a treatment system that could restore water safety and confidence. Culligan Water was chosen to supply and install the systems.

Homes in the defined implementation area were offered treatment systems that included metered water softeners, 5 micron sediment filters, and exchangeable large Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) filters. Though carbon filters are effective in removing the TCE contaminant from water, risks remain because such filters can contain and breed bacteria, presenting new risks to residents. Disinfection is necessary, but chlorine disinfection is inefficient in this set-up. Culligan Water’s Project Manager for this project, Geoff Buck says that, “the only disinfection that works with a carbon filtration system is a UV system.” Leaders selected VIQUA’s Pro Series as the UV disinfection solution for Beckwith Township.

After VIQUA Professional Plus Pro Series Installation

A major factor in the choice of UV manufacturer was the reality that home owners would be taking care of the units. Beckwith Township needed a disinfection solution that would be dependable, and easy to operate and maintain. The reliable VIQUA Pro Series was a perfect choice, with its ease of operation and maintenance for home-owners. Installation was also easily adapted to the various home set-ups, important in a project of this size. Buck added, “The quality of the product is far superior in construction and function as compared to other units which we have worked with. We highly recommend the VIQUA Pro Series.”

VIQUA Pro10s were installed in 247 homes in the affected area.
A local school is protected with two VIQUA Pro20s.

Beckwith Township has now implemented the Water Supply Program into by-law. This is the first program of its kind in Canada.

Every home in the defined implementation area has been given the opportunity to put this protection in place, and each system will be registered. New homes in the affected area will be required to have systems, ensuring clean and safe water for residents.

Gone are the risks and fears of long-term harm and serious illness caused by contaminated water. Residents of Beckwith Township are now able to confidently enjoy their water. VIQUA is proud to be an important part of the solution.
